In celebration of our 30th anniversary, we've compiled a collection of personal stories from our community who have been part of our journey and have helped define the spirit of Tommy Bahama. From heartfelt memories to simple reminders to live life like it's one long weekend, we hope these people inspire you as they've inspired us.
Thirty years ago, Tommy Bahama was founded with one simple purpose: to help everyone—whoever and wherever they are—relax, exhale, and just enjoy the moment. We call that Living the Island Life, and for Roy and Sheri Disney, that state of mind is, well, everything.
“Living the Island Life means a lot of things to us,” the California-based couple said. “The perfect sunset, the perfect meal, the perfect weather—and sharing it all with family and friends.”
“It's a soft, warm rain—the kind where you just don't care, and have that no-pressure, no-stress, no-place-to-be-other-than-where-you-are kind of feeling.”
Ahh, that feeling. Magical and special, where all is right with the world. For some, that feeling takes over while on vacation, washed up on an exotic beach with no soul in sight. For others, it's a state of mind of feeling like you're on vacation, even if you're in the backyard, at your local bar, or yes… even at work.
“For us, Tommy Bahama symbolizes the reward at the end of the rainbow, even if it is for a few minutes. It's why we work so hard and what we work so hard for,” they said. “To be able to relax in comfort and feel like you are in the best place on earth, wherever that might be…”
Roy, the grand-nephew of Walt Disney, is no stranger to seeking out that moment of paradise on the daily. The competitive sailor spends much of his life on the water, seeking adventures from his boat, the Pyewacket.
“Sailing is a sport and an adventure like no other,” he remarked. “It lets you go to places few people have ever gone. The best sunsets (and sunrises) I have ever seen have been out at sea. It's really hard work getting there, but when you get to the dock, hug your family and friends, and finally let go and relax… That in itself feels like what Tommy Bahama is trying to say.”
And what about when Roy is not on the water? The duo's daydreams inevitably involve going somewhere sandy with their legendary
Tommy Bahama beach chairs.
“First, it's the best beach chair made. Secondly, we both love the beach—always, anywhere. Where would we go? Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji, British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas… I can think of a hundred similar places but they all have the same thing in common—a great place to relax and enjoy.”
