Designing a Home Run: The Art Behind Tommy Bahama's MLB® Prints

To celebrate our love of baseball, we sat down with the graphic artist behind some of our most collectible MLB® prints, Tina Grasdal. She took us through the inspiration behind her iconic work—and why she loves creating art that honors America's favorite pastime.

“I was one of the first artists ever at Tommy Bahama and started my career creating our earliest camp shirt artwork and prints. I moved to a different company in 2007 but was invited to return when Tommy Bahama signed its agreement with MLB®. We kicked off the project with a trip to New York to watch a baseball game, and the rest as they say, is history!”

“Every artist is unique, including my peers in the Tommy Bahama art department. My background is in fine art and apparel design, so I learned how to paint and draw by hand. I use the computer as a tool and not my main medium, which sets me apart from digital art.”

“We honored some baseball greats with limited-edition shirts. I also got to meet several World Series™ winners and MLB® players! My dad was a college baseball coach who was obsessed, but I only grew to really love researching the history of the game after I started this job. It's an old and multilayered part of history. I wish my father was around to see what I created.”
