In celebration of our 30th anniversary, we’ve compiled a collection of personal stories from our community who have been part of our journey, and who have helped define the spirit of Tommy Bahama. From heartfelt memories to simple reminders to live life like it’s one long weekend, we hope these people inspire you as they’ve inspired us.
Mouthwatering coconut shrimp, refreshing mojitos, tangy key lime pie... Our Restaurants & Bars have been known to bring the flavor—and with locations all over the country, you’re likely not far from experiencing your own dose of island hospitality. But what if you tried to visit every Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar? Well, that’s exactly what Cheryl Hanks and her husband have set out to do.
“It was just kind of a funny joke at first, but now I'm more serious about it. I want to go to all of them,” Cheryl said.
Her Tommy Bahama Tour, as she calls it, started in southern California, where she visited our locations in Newport Beach, Palm Desert, and Palm Springs. As of March 2023, she’s also visited Scottsdale, Las Vegas, and all four locations in Hawaii.
“We haven't been to any in South Florida or any in Texas... yet,” Cheryl said with a chuckle. In fact, she’s eyeing South Florida as her next destination to tour, since Jacksonville is the only location in the state she’s been to so far. Down the line, she also plans to visit our Texas and New York locations.
“It's just the feeling of relaxation. I had a pretty busy, hectic career, and being able to sit and relax in an environment that is so casual and welcoming is great,” she beamed. “And then you sit down with your coconut martini and—I mean, what else is there, right?”
Cheryl and her husband love to sit in the sand, relax under the sun, and read a good book. According to her, the beach is like their second home. But after soaking up the sunshine, they need a place to cool down. And as Cheryl said, “Tommy Bahama is more about the after party, you know?”
Even after visiting so many different locations across America, Cheryl and her husband continue to love what our restaurants and bars have to offer. No matter which state they were visiting, our locations always delivered the island state of mind.
“It's consistent, you know? You go to some places and there might be one bartender or one chef or whatever that's really good, and then the next time you go and it's not good,” she said. “But Tommy Bahama's always been very consistent and good everywhere you go. I mean, who doesn't want that?”
One of the big inspirations for Cheryl’s Tommy Bahama Tour is the Coconut Cloud, our iconic martini featuring one of our favorite tropical fruits.
“Anything with coconut in it, I love. When I was a little kid, my dad was always making stuff with it. And they're healthy! Maybe not the Coconut Cloud, but...” she added with a laugh.
Getting that cocktail at a Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar has become a sort of ritual for Cheryl and her girlfriends. Every year, she and a group of five meet in Palm Springs, and they always grab a Coconut Cloud. In fact, sharing these moments is a big part of what “living the island life” means to her.
“Living the island life is being able to do what I want and love: surfing, enjoying the most beautiful place in the world, the beach, and relaxing,” she said. “And I think enjoying it with my friends is probably the most important part. Sharing my Coconut Clouds, and my favorite place to eat... That's the dream.”
In fact, Cheryl’s first experience with Tommy Bahama happened because of a friendship. More than 20 years ago, one of her girlfriends took her to our Newport Beach location and encouraged her to buy her very first Tommy Bahama dress.
“I still have that dress today. I still wear it, which is crazy,” she said.
Cheryl and her husband are retired now, and they live in Mammoth Lake, California. While it’s a beautiful summer destination for experiencing the great outdoors, the winters aren’t so kind. Located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, this ski-resort town regularly gets buried with snowfall.
To escape the cold, Cheryl and her husband spend six months out of the year in Waikiki instead—which luckily for them has a Tommy Bahama restaurant located right off Kalakaua Avenue.
Now that they’re retired, one of the things they want to do is travel more. Thanks to this Tommy Bahama Tour, what was originally an of-the-moment whim became a reason to see new sights, explore new vistas, and unwind in new places.
“Traveling takes you to new places to see beauty,” Cheryl said. “The Tommy Bahama Tour just does that. Plus, there’s always a Coconut Cloud waiting for me.”
